Santa Loves the Bag Monster

Before Christmas, the Bag Monster/Lady ran into Santa Claus. He said he was very proud of the efforts Fort McMurrayites have made with reducing waste. He says he uses the biggest of reusable bags on his Christmas Eve voyage (his mega sac full of gifts!)

In the first 3 months of the bag ban, Fort McMurray has kept 6.3 million single-use bags from going into landfill.

When talking with a police officer the same day, she mentioned that in a 3-day weekend, our city created trash at the landfill the size of a football field, 8 feet deep. That's without the bags.

The Global Club

The Global Club is students Grade 4-8 at Ecole Dickinsfield School. We made a survey to see how people felt about the ban before it started and how they're feeling about it now. Akshaya feels it was good to make the bag ban because it helps the environment. Casey's glad that he doesn't see any more plastic bags floating around his neighbourhood.

Fort McMurray, home of 100,000 and a reputation for "Dirty Oil-sands", is now a leader in North America with its Single Use Bag By-Law. On Sept. 1, 2010 all stores (grocery, retail) except for pharmacy, restaurants and liquor stores were prohibited from giving out single use bags. The goal is to reduce garbage.
